Speaker:Chandra Sen, Ph.D., is the vice chairman of surgery, director
of the Laboratory of Molecular Medicine, director of the DNA
Microarray & Genetics facility of the Davis Heart & Lung Research
Institute, and director of research, Center for Minimally Invasive
Surgery at the Ohio State University medical Center. His works
pioneer a major breakthrough in vitamin E research. Dr. Sen
has published more than 100 research articles and over 10 scientific
books. He is the editor in chief of the international journal
Antioxidants & Redox Signaling and is also a peer reviewer of

Speaker:Ronald Watson, Ph.D., has a bachelor's degree in chemistry
from Brigham Young University and a doctorate in biochemistry from
Michigan State University. He spent two years at the Harvard
School of Public Health doing immunology and nutrition research.
He then taught at several medical schools and Purdue University's
nutrition program. For the past 22 years he was a professor in
the School of Medicine at the university of Arizona. He has directed
a center and grants on AIDS research for 15 years, including
investigating the role of nutrition and alternative medicines in
animals and people.

Joseph M Betz, Ph.D., became the director of the Dietary
Supplements Methods and Reference Materials Program at the Office of
Dietary Supplements (ODS) in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
in December 2001. In this role, he oversees efforts to enhance and
stimulate research and training in fields relevant to dietary
supplements at NIH and to promote development of validated
analytical methods and reference materials for use by industry,
regulatory agencies and clinical researchers. Prior to his current
appointment, Betz spent 12 years as a research chemist in the
Division of Natural Products at FDA’s Center for Food Safety and
Applied Nutrition.This was followed by two years as vice president
for scientific and technical affairs at the American Herbal Products
Association.
Speaker:
James S. Miller, Ph.D., manages the William L. Brown Center for
Plant Genetic Resources at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Activities
include efforts in ethnobotany, the taxonomy and conservation of
medicinal plants, natural products discovery, databases on plant
use, and other areas of economic botany. Medicinal plant programs
focus ontaxonomy and identification of medicinal plants, survey of
their conservation status, and horticultural research concerning
their cultivation in the United States, South Africa and the
Republic of Georgia. Natural products discovery partnerships aim to
discover new agricultural, nutritional, or pharmaceutical products.
Dr. Miller earned his doctorate in biology in 1985 from St. Louis
University.
Speaker:
Michelle Lum, Ph.D., received her bachelor’s degree in molecular
biology from the University of California, San Diego and her
doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her
Ph.D. work involved the molecular analysis of plants of the legume
family. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher with Dr.Ann M.
Hirsch, the head of the Agricultural-Botany core for UCLA's Center
for Dietary Supplement Research in Botanicals. Her experience in
plant molecular biology is being applied toward the development and
implementation of molecular-based methods for confirming the
contents of botanicals and identifying possible contaminating plant
species.

Mary Ann Lila, Ph.D., directs a research team at the University
of Illinois-Urbana that isolates and characterizes bioactive
components from selected plant sources. She's a professor in the
Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences and an
assistant dean for research in the College of Agriculture, Consumer
and Environmental Sciences. She has authored more than 100
journal articles and book chapters, and has won several research
awards including the Paul A Funk Scholarship Recognition, the
Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, the Amoco Award for
Excellence in Undergraduate Instruction, and the Lilly Teaching
Fellowship. Dr. Lila won a Fulbright Senior Scholar award to live
and study in New Zealand in 1999.

Alexander Schauss, Ph.D., is the director
of Natural and Medicinal Products Research,AIBMR Life Sciences,
Inc., Puyallup,Wash. He is also the adjunct research professor of
Botanical Medicine at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine,
and former clinical professor of Natural Products Research at the
same institution. Dr. Schauss has been a member of the NIH Office of
Alternative Medicine Advisory Council, the Ad Hoc Developmental
Planning Committee of the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. He is
the author/co-author of more than 125 papers that have appeared in a
diverse range of scientific journals and the author of Minerals,Trace Elements and Human Health, 4th edition.

Jon Benninger
is director of business development for Virgo
Publishing's Health & Nutrition Division, which produces INSIDER,
HSR: Health Supplement Retailer, and low carb retailer
magazines.Virgo Publishing also produces the SupplySide trade shows
and operates Nutrilearn, an online industry-specific training
program that furthers professional development. Benninger entered
the natural products industry in 1990 and has held positions in
sales, marketing, public relations, purchasing and management.
Benninger is also vice president of the Dietary Supplement Education
Alliance (DSEA).

Robyn Frisch
is the president, chief executive officer (CEO) and founder of
ROCHEM International Inc. in Ronkonkoma, N.Y. She had worked for the
largest state-run chemical and pharmaceutical trading company in
China prior coming to the United States in 1990.With 20 years
experience in the pharmaceutical and nutritional industries, she
built a strong bridge between customers in the United States and
Europe and the manufacturers of chemical, pharmaceutical and
nutritional ingredients in China.

Mike Smith
has been with DNP International Co. Inc. since March 2000. He serves
as vice president and general manager in charge of developing its
finished supplement line, Dynamic Nutritional Products. In this
position, he manages sales, product development and marketing. Smith
is also responsible for handling in-house technical issues for both
DNP and Dynamic. Smith began his career in the pharmaceutical
industry. Prior to DNP International, he worked with a major
supplement manufacturer for six years as a regional sales manager,
covering the Western United States. Smith holds a degree in
biological sciences and two years laboratory research in cell
physiology.

David W.Turner
is concurrently the CEO and chairman of Zuellig Group
North America and BI Nutraceuticals. He has previously held a number
of senior executive positions with private and public corporations,
several of which he has taken public.Turner lived for more than 17
years in Asia; his most recent posting was as regional director of
Zuellig Pharma, the largest distributor of pharmaceutical and
healthcare products in Asia Pacific.Turner is also a director of
several life sciences companies and is an advisor to several
government health care-related organizations. He is a successful

Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D.,
is a senior scientist at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition
Research Center on Aging where his research efforts focus on the
role of dietary antioxidants in health promotion and disease
prevention. He is a professor in the Friedman School of Nutrition
Science and Policy at Tufts University and works to incorporate
sound nutrition science into public health policy. Dr. Blumberg
serves on the FDA Food Advisory Committee and has worked with the
World Health Organization to develop dietary guidelines for older
adults. Among his honors, Dr. Blumberg has received the ACAM Award
in Preventive Medicine and NNFA Burton Kallman Scientific Award.

Susan Walker, M.D.,
director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs, Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) and lead scientist for dietary supplements
at the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), US Food
and Drug Administration. She received her B.S. degree from the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and her M.D. degree from the
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda,
Maryland. The Division of Dietary Supplement Programs develops
policy, regulations, compliance strategies, position papers and
advisory opinions on issues related to dietary supplements. The
Division is also responsible for responding to new dietary
ingredient and structure/function claim notifications, and providing
clinical/scientific coordination and expertise on adverse events,
research, and risk assessment related to dietary supplements. The
Division also provides coordination and technical resources for
education initiatives.
