Course Title: Clarinol™ CLA, the highest concentrated form of
conjugated linoleic acid
Course Description: This course presents information regarding the
benefits of Clarinol™ CLA in promoting effective weight management by reducing
body fat and increasing lean muscle. Included in the discussion are the
mechanisms of action, clinical evidence and the basis that Clarinol™ CLA is
not only the highest concentrated form of CLA but the most effective form of CLA
as well.
Overview: The presence of conjugated fatty acids in milk fat was first
established over 66 years ago (Booth et al. 1935). Increased UV light absorption
pointed to an increase in conjugated fatty acids in milk which was observed
after cows were turned out to pasture in the spring.
In the early eighties, a substance isolated from grilled ground beef by Dr.
Michael W. Pariza and his research team at the University of Wisconsin was found
to inhibit the development of tumors in mice. After further study, the substance
was identified as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a derivative of linoleic acid
that is found widely in vegetable oils and animal fats.
Although CLA is a naturally occurring component of the human diet, it occurs
at concentrations far too small to deliver the weight management benefits. In
the US for example, with the trend towards a diet low in fats and increased use
of a low fat or non-fat milk and other dairy products, the average CLA intake is
estimated to be 160 to 430 mg/day. Beneficial effects, however, have been
demonstrated at dosages of 2 grams to 3 grams per day1. Achieving this level
requires the supplementation through capsules, nutritional bars, shakes, and
other potential functional food products containing Clarinol™ CLA.
How Clarinol™ CLA works in weight management:
The ability to maintain a healthy body weight and a low fat–to–muscle
ratio is referred to as weight management. Dieting on the other hand refers to
the active reduction of body fat over a specific period of time. It has been
found that the period immediately following a diet can be a most frustrating
time of trying to keep the lost weight off, in many cases all the weight and
sometimes even more is gained back.
CLA has been found to promote the body’s natural fat metabolism making it
easier to get your body in shape. Several studies investigating the effects of
CLA on weight management and body composition confirm this. Studies show that
supplementation with CLA (c9, t11 and the t10, c12 isomers in a 50:50 ratio)
aids in weight management by promoting fat loss in healthy and overweight
individuals. When weight is gained, or regained after a diet, CLA has been found
to promote muscle growth as well as to inhibit the growth of fat cells improving
the shape of the body.
Scientists now believe that CLA may have a unique effect on body fat by many
means:
- By inhibiting the transport mechanism of fat into fat cells. This way
the size of these cells is reduced, which may lead to an improved body
shape.
- By enhancing the activity of an enzyme present in the muscles. By
stimulating this enzyme, it helps the body to build up more lean muscle
mass.
A number of studies have demonstrated that CLA reduces fat mass, while
increasing lean body mass2. A recent human study investigating the effect of
3.4g CLA/day in 180 normal healthy individuals led to a significant decrease
(9%) in body fat compared with individuals not taking CLA4. In addition, another
study in overweight populations demonstrated that at least 3.4 g CLA/d for a
period of 12 weeks was necessary to see a significant reduction in body fat1.
The chart below shows the Positive Effect on
Lean Body Mass

A simple consumer friendly version of these scientific clinical studies for
the physiological mechanism is as follows:
CLA works to reduce body fat by preventing fat accumulation in fat cells. Fat
normally enters the fat cell through a “door” that is controlled by an
enzyme, the “key”. By acting on this enzyme, or “key”, CLA keeps the “door”
locked. When the “door” is locked, fat cannot enter the cells thereby not
allowing the amount of fat to increase in the cells. The less fat that is
present in the cells, the smaller and less mature they become, this helps to
reduce the level of fat in the body. CLA works to increase lean muscle mass by
enhancing the enzyme activity in muscle cells. The increased presence of fat
will be burned in the muscle cells, thus building up lean muscle mass.

In addition, a study published in the Journal of Food Chemistry and
Toxicology demonstrates that an intake of 7.5 grams/day of Clarinol™ CLA for 1
year is safe in humans (Whigham, et al., 2004).
Combining Clarinol™ CLA with a Healthy Life Style:
CLA is not a ‘magic bullet’ for weight management. However, using
Clarinol™ CLA in conjunction with regular exercise and a healthy diet is
essential for good body weight management. Some tips for combining Clarinol™
CLA and a healthy lifestyle include:
- Eating a variety of foods from the six food groups, and choose a diet
low in fat.
- Consume sugar and alcohol in moderation.
- Alternate your workout routines throughout the course of the week to
work different muscle groups.
- Lifting weights increases muscle mass, which helps to burn fat quicker
– increasing your metabolic weight.
How long does Clarinol CLA take to show results:
When consumed in recommended doses, results from Clarinol™ CLA can be seen
in 8-12 weeks. This is the time taken to see a change in clinical studies which
have been carried out to date.
The Advantages of using Clarinol™ CLA:
Gram for gram, of all the CLA products on the market today, Clarinol™ CLA
oil and powder offer the highest concentration (95%) of the beneficial active
isomers (c9, t11 and t10, c12) responsible for weight management. This means
less is required to achieve the same effects.
Clarinol™ CLA was the FIRST CLA to be ‘self-affirmed’ GRAS in the
United States. Lipid Nutrition has completed the most extensive toxicology
studies on Clarinol™ CLA according to OECD guidelines and thus can ensure the
safety of Clarinol™ CLA
Clarinol™ CLA is also the CLA brand which had the highest percentage of women
more satisfied with its results than the other CLA brands. 93% of women
satisfied with Clarinol™ CLA compared to 78% of women using competition CLA
(Citation: Consumer study of the marketplace conducted by Lightspeed Research
and Lipid Nutrition of 800+ women who diet, exercise and/or take health
supplements)
Can Clarinol™ CLA be used with a low carb diet?
Yes, Clarinol™ CLA can be used with a low carb diet because Clarinol™ CLA
itself is not a magic bullet and cannot help a consumer alone. Every clinical
study has shown that in combination with dieting and exercise those taking
Clarinol™ CLA see an increased difference in reduction of body fat and an
increase of lean muscle leading to a more toned and shapely figure.
If
Clarinol™ CLA prevents fat from being absorbed from the blood stream where
does all the excess fat in the blood stream go?
Clarinol™ CLA only prevents fat from being absorbed by the body’s fat
cells. It does not affect the uptake of fat to the Liver, Muscles or other
tissues where it is required?
Conclusion
Continued evidence provides increased substantiation that CLA reduces body
fat and increases lean muscle in humans when combined with a healthy diet and
exercise. Clarinol™ CLA is the highest concentrated form of the active CLA
isomers (c9, t11 & t10, c12) that are responsible for the weight management
benefits. In addition, because Clarinol™ CLA is the highest concentrated form
of the active CLA isomers (c9, t11 & t10, c12) it is also the CLA brand
which had the highest percentage of women more satisfied with its results than
the other CLA brands.
