ABC Herbal information Course Two
ABC Herbal Information Course Two

Introduction

rerequisite: Successful completion of the ABC Herbal Information Course One

The purpose of Course Two is to expand upon the knowledge gained in Course One. In Course One the participant was provided an overview of key issues and concepts in the field of herbal medicine along with basic science-based information on 29 herbs commonly sold in the U.S. market.

Part 1 of Course Two provides more in-depth information on safety, standardization, market, and legal and regulatory issues that affect consumers and the herbal products industry.

Part 2 of Course Two presents additional information on the herbs in Course One. (Note: Elder berry was also added to the ABC Herbal Information Course One on April 7, 2005 and is repeated in Course Two for those who took Course One prior to that time. If you studied elder berry as part of Course One, you do not have to read it again. However, there may be questions on elder berry in the test for Course Two, Part 2. We apologize for the inconvenience but thought it important to provide the information in both places as this herb is gaining importance in the marketplace.)

Part 3 of Course Two provides safety information on specific herbs, some that were addressed in Course One plus some additional herbs.

Unlike Course One, Parts 1, 2, and 3 of Course Two can be taken in any order; none is a prerequisite for any of the others. Each part will have an assessment at the end. You must score an 80 or above on each assessment to successfully complete the course.

Modified articles from HerbalGram, the quarterly journal of the American Botanical Council, and HerbClip, ABC’s literature review service, comprise Parts 1 and 2 of Course Two. Safety reviews of popular herbs in the U.S. market written by the American Botanical Council comprise Part 3.

The LEARNING OBJECTIVES for Course Two are to:

• Evaluate safety information on specific herbs in order to articulate what is stated in the scientific literature.
• Appreciate the history of the regulation of dietary supplements, FDA enforcement, consumer protection, and the importance of good manufacturing practices (GMPs).
• Integrate current clinical research on specific herbs into your conversations with customers/clients so they can be better informed on what is stated in the scientific literature.

Upon completion of this course, you will have the information needed to help your customers/clients make informed choices in their selection of herbal products based on the most current information available. As always, it is important to remind them to consult their healthcare practitioner when appropriate. You will also receive:
• Renewal of your Herbal Information Specialist Certificate
• HIS window decal
• Formatted press release to send to your local media
