The use of herbs and herbal products has increased dramatically in
recent years. Many consumers obtain their products in the retail market
through health and natural food stores as well as mass-market retailers.
Some of these consumers have worked with healthcare professionals who have
background in the use of integrative therapies and who are able to give
them sound advice on the safe use of herbal medicine. Others either have
not consulted with a healthcare professional, or the healthcare
professional they contact is not familiar with the use of these products.
Either of these groups may or may not have done some research of their own
into the use of herbal medicine.
It is likely that during the
course of your work in a retail setting, you will encounter inquiries
concerning these herbs and herbal products. It is important to be able to
educate your customers with well-researched and accurate information that
will help them make sound decisions.Your role is not to substitute for the
services of a healthcare professional. The course presents a range of
general topics to familiarize you with the overall field of herbal
medicine and focuses on the specific use of many of the popular herbs and
herbal products sold in the retail setting. It will also guide you toward
knowing what is or is not appropriate to discuss with a
customer.
In addition to the tremendous knowledge gained through
the Herbal Information Specialist (HIS) program, those successfully
completing the program will also receive:
- Herbal Information Specialist Certificate

- Description of Herb Sections
The purpose of these
sections is to provide the certification candidate a basic working
knowledge of a variety of topics so that they will be able to converse
with customers on these issues. *(Prerequisite) Part
one must be taken before part two.
Part Two: – Science-Based Information on Popular Herbs
This
part will cover basic information on 29 common herbs. An important focus
of this information will be the clinical studies that have been conducted
on each herb and the results of those studies. The purpose of this section
is to be able to guide the customer through the basic information helpful
in making purchase decisions and to base that information on what is
revealed in the literature and in clinical studies.
After each part
there is a post-test, which assesses the degree to which the objectives of
each section are met. The minimum passing score on either course part is
80%. The purpose of achieving these objectives is to demonstrate mastery
of the material as the candidate moves forward toward receiving the Herbal Information Specialist (HIS) certificate.
*Although a receipt of completion will be issued after each
successful completion of part one and two, an HIS Certificate will only be
issued after successful completion of both parts of the
course.
